Mexican Grand Prix – Formula 1 Gran Premio De Mexico 2017

It’s time for the Mexican Grand Prix and with a wonderful qualifying session yesterday which sees Vettel taking pole position with Max Verstappen right behind in 2nd place.

We’re up for a great race ahead and here is all the action as it happens for the Mexican Grand Prix LIVE.

Pit Lane OPEN

The drivers are now all on track with their engineers ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix – the weather conditions are ok, it’s slightly overcast but very warm which could add some uncertainty to the race.

Team radio before the formation lap.

Hamilton – “The seat is roasting”

Drivers are now getting ready for the formation lap with last-minute adjustments from their engineers and teams.

FORMATION LAP

The drivers are now lining up for the start.

Lap 1

Verstappen gets a good start and makes his way round the first corner with Vettel – the two almost coming together. Vettel and Hamilton touch with Hamilton now suffering a flat tyre and making his way back to the pits.

Hamilton – “Flat tyre, I’ve got a flat tyre.”

Vettel now comes into the pits.

Hamilton now comes into the pits.

Lap 2

Verstappen leads the race with Bottas in 2nd place followed by Ocon in 3rd.

Sainz now comes into the pits.

Lap 4

Max Verstappen now sets the fastest lap time. He’s leading the race.

Vettel is in 18th place and Hamilton is in 20th.

They have all the pit stops of the other cars ahead.

Lap 6

Ricciardo now comes into the pits.

Lap 7

Alonso is now trying to make his way past Grosjean – battles ongoing around the track.

Hamilton – “He hit me deliberately?”

Team to Hamilton – “Not sure Lewis.”

Lap 8

Verstappen is still leading the race.

Hamilton is in 19th place and Vettel has made his way up into 16th place.

Ricciardo is OUT of the race.

Lap 11

Fernando Alonso makes his way past Grosjean and the two come together just on the corner – hitting tyres.

Raikkonen has now closed the gap to Perez and is right behind, ready to make his way past.

Verstappen leading the race with Bottas behind in 2nd place.

Max Verstappen now sets another fastest lap time.

Lap 12

Vettel is right behind Massa and makes his way past – Massa reacts with a very aggressive move, pushing Vettel off-track and nearly colliding together.

Vettel – “Honestly, is this some kind of way to drive the others off-track….”

Team to Vettel – “Seb, stay focused – stay focused.”

Vettel – “I am staying focused.”

 Lap 17

Max Verstappen sets another fastest lap – he’s leading the race.

Vettel is now making his way through the grid – Hamilton is still back in 19th place.

Lap 19

Bottas now sets the fastest lap time.

Raikkonen is now up into 5th place as his team-mate is in P13.

Hamilton – “Trying to get past these guys is difficult.” Sainz is the driver he’s referring to.

Hamilton is in 19th place – still.

Lap 22

Verstappen has now reached the back of the grid and is starting to lap – he’s now right behind Hamilton with Hamilton now being blue-flagged.

Lap 26

Team to Hulkenberg – “Stop the car, the car is not safe – stop the car and get out.”

Hulkenberg is out of the race.

Max Verstappen sets another fastest lap time.

Lap 28

Vettel is now up into 10th place – he’s got Alonso in front.

Hamilton now makes his way past Sainz – he’s reporting an issue with the tyres with the team responding – “We have other plans”

Lap 33

There’s a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) – some drivers are taking advantage by coming into the pits, including Vettel.  who’s up into P8.

Hamilton is down in P16

Lap 36

Lewis Hamilton now makes his way past Grosjean.

Lap 37

Vettel is now up into P7 – he’s making his way through the grid. His team-mate, Raikkonen is up in P3 with what seems to be a good Mexican Grand Prix for him.

Lap 38

Hamilton – “When I ask a question, please give me a reply.”

Team to Hamilton – “Lewis, we’re looking through data.”

Verstappen is still leading the race with Bottas behind in P2. It’s a good race for him too – he’s managing things well.

Lap 41

Max Verstappen is being told to push by his team – after one lap.

Team to Versteppen – “That was the same lap time as the last lap Max.”

Verstappen – “Soooorry.”

Lap 45

Team to Vettel – “Very good pace – keep pushing.”

Lap 47

Verstappen leading the race – he’s managing the pace.

Team to Hamilton – “We are forecast for P8, we are forecast for P8” Hamilton is now up into P12 whereas Vettel has managed to make his way up into P7.

Lap 48

The top 3 drivers at the moment are – Verstappen, Bottas and Raikkonen.

Vettel is now closing the gap to Perez.

Lap 51

Vettel now makes his way past Perez and is up into P6 – he’s pushing the car and testing the limits of others around him by braking late and making his move round corners.

The better the result, the more points he’ll get at the end of the race keeping the title battle ongoing.

Lap 53

Perez now comes into the pits.

Hamilton is now behind Vandoorne – he’s not closing the gap quickly but looks like he’s taking his team – there’s not much for him to worry about in terms of points.

Lap 54

Vettel now closing the gap to Stroll – he’s pushing.

Vettel now makes his way past Stroll easily and is up into P5.

Verstappen managing the race and the pace – Hamilton is in P11.

Lap 55

Vettel now sets the fastest lap time for the Mexican Grand Prix.

Lap 57

Hamilton questioning where Vettel is on the grid.

Team to Hamilton – “Vettel is in P5 – he needs to get to P2.”

Hamilton – “Is that possible for him?”

Team to Hamilton – “Negative, negative.”

Lap 61

Vettel has now managed to make his way up into P4 but there’s quite a gap between him and Raikkonen who’s in P3 – it’s a good result as he’s made his way through the grid right from the back following the start of the Mexican Grand Prix.

Lap 62

Hamilton is in P10. He’s started to make his way through the grid but he’s not as aggressive as Vettel – he’s managing the tyres and pace.

Hamilton questioning the team on Vettel’s location again with the team reporting his position and timing.

Lap 63

Verstappen leading the race – it’s still Verstappen, Bottas and Raikkonen as the top 3 drivers. They’re all managing their tyres and positions at the moment.

Lap 68

4 laps to go and Hamilton is behind Alonso – the two nearly come together as Hamilton tries to make his way past the McLaren but Alonso is not giving up.

The two touch but continue battling.

Lap 70

Vettel now sets the fastest lap time and as things stand, Lewis Hamilton has won the title as Vettel needs to be in P2 to stop Hamilton from winning.

Lap 71

It’s the final lap and as things are at the moment – Lewis Hamilton will be crowned World Champion for the fourth time.

Max Verstappen WINS the Mexican Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton has been crowned World Champion for the fourth time.

 Hamilton – “I’d like to say a big thanks to the team for all your hard work and support this year.”

Hamilton – “I want to say thank you to everyone who came out to support us. We’ve got great fans around the word and to win here with this atmosphere. I don’t know what to say other than that dreams really come true. I want to thank my family and my team.”

Raikkonen – “We didn’t have the speed to get any further but we can’t do anything – that’s how things go and hopefully we can do better for the end of the season.”

There was a little bit of a mx up on the podium as no interviews were held – instead, the podium turned into DJ Platform for the party.

The press conference is now taking place.
